Internet And Sports Gambling
Many people enjoy placing a friendly wager on a boxing, golf, football, baseball, or basketball event. This can be a wager between buddies or placing an official wager with a bookie. There are a few concepts you should understand, before you get started placing your bets. The first is understanding what a line is and how the line works. The line is basically a proposition—it’s what your wager is. The pointspread line is the number of points that one team is favored over another. If the favored team wins by more than the pointspread, then those who bet that the favored team would cover the spread, win the bet. If the underdog wins or covers the spread, then those bettors who wagered for the underdog win the bet. Online Sports Gambling The money line, also known as the odds, works a bit differently. If a book is using a 10 cent line, as most do, a game will be posted like this: CARDINALS -1.20; Giants +1.10. The 10 cents is the difference between the two numbers and is the straddle. However, if you think the Cardinals will win, you’ll be betting for the favorites, and you’ll need to put up $1 20 for each $1 00 you want to win. If you want to bet for the underdog Giants, you’ll put up $1 00 for each $1 10 you want to win. So if you bet for the Cardinals and they win, you walk away with $2 20 for each $1 20 you wagered. And if you bet for the Giants, you win $2 10 for each $1 00 you put up. This can be confusing for many to understand. History Of Sports Gambling There are also some special wagers used in sports betting. One is the over/under bet. This is a bet made against a posted total of points or runs scored in a game. The bettor wagers that the two teams will cumulatively score more or less than the posted line. The bet can be made in any sports, although this is particularly popular in football. You can also make halftime bets. These bets make whatever happens in the first half of games absolutely irrelevant. Only the scores during the second half count. Also, futures betting is very popular. These are bets made before a season is over. The typical futures bet is made before the first game has been played, but most all books will continue to post versions of the futures bets as seasons progress.
