Legalized gambling has always enjoyed its place as a popular form of entertainment. Whether it be betting on the outcome of chariot races or baseball games, man has always been drawn to the game of chance. Gambling in early America can be traced back to games played by Native Americans. But the first major gaming center was established in New Orleans in the early 1700s. Gambling’s popularity grew over the next 200 years and is probably most commonly associated with the Wild West and such legendary figures like Wyatt Earp. Nevada was the first state to sanction many forms of gambling in the 1930s. Games like slot machines card games and variety of other games of chance were permitted in Nevada, and this allowed a number of small casinos in Las Vegas to rise to prominence. It wasn’t until 1946 when Benjamin Siegel opened the Flamingo Casino Hotel when the Las Vegas Strip started to become what it is today. This gave birth to the gambling mecca that is still expanding and attracting millions of people every year. Because gambling is so lucrative, New Jersey joined Nevada in allowing casino gambling in 1978. The seaside town of Atlantic City which was known for its boardwalk and for the Miss America Pageant, became known as a major place to gamble. But since the late 1990s in the United States, gambling has been allowed in more and more states. There is plenty of growth in this industry. Casino gambling is many states is limited to riverboats. And many states don’t have any casino gambling other than that allowed on Indian reservations. The Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988 allowed gambling on Native American reservations. Internet Gambling Legal Legalized gambling is more popular than ever before. Each year, different state groups are able to put gambling legislation on their state ballots. If it passes, the states then are allowing gambling in their states. The major draw for states is the money it brings in. Many states send that money to the schools and their state departments of education. Legalized gambling has benefits and drawbacks. The major drawbacks being that the more gambling that is allowed, the more people who are out there gambling outside their means and being irresponsible about how they spend their money.
