Online Gambling Glossary

Ante. In poker games, this is the initial bet that is placed before the cards are dealt.

Bank Hand. One of the two hands dealt in baccarat. The player hand is the other.

Banker. This is the person responsible for paying the winning bets. The casino itself is the bank in most casino games.

Bankroll. This is the amount of money you’ve allotted for gambling.

Basket. This is a roulette term meaning the street bet on the numbers 0, 00, and 2.

Biased Wheel. This means a roulette wheel that has a slight imperfection that causes it to be unbalanced. This bias causes certain numbers to be spun more often than others.

Card counting. Keeping mental track of the cards that have come out during the game of blackjack.

Choppy Dice. Dice that are inconsistent—ones that pass and don’t pass repeatedly—in the game of craps.

Gambling Terms

Column Bet. This is a bet made on one of the 12-number vertical columns on the roulette layout.

Comp. This is a complimentary freebie like your room or your meal that is given to you because you spent money gambling.

Craps. The numbers 2, 3, and 12 in the game of craps.

Double Down. This is an option in blackjack that allows the player to receive exactly one more card to complete the hand.

Fade Gambling Terms

Greens. Casino chips with a $25 value.

High roller. This is a player who frequently visits casinos and bets large amounts of money.

Hot. This is a term for a player who has been winning, a slot machine that has been paying off, or a gaming table at which players are winning.

No Pairs. This is a deal in poker in which five cards of different ranks and suits are dealt.

Odd Bet. A wager in roulette that an odd number will come up on the next spin.

Outside Bets. The bets located along the outside of the roulette layout that pay two to one or even money.

Pit. This is the area behind a section of gaming tables.

Probability. This is the likelihood that any given event will occur.

Progressive Slots. These are slot machines with jackpots that are increasing with every coin that is inserted.

Snake Eyes. This is a roll of two in the game of craps.

Surrender. This is a choice you have in blackjack in which the player, who is anticipating that the dealer has blackjack, can quit the hand and forfeit half the bet.
